So, you’ve decided on what kind of shoot you want, and you’ve got your location picked out, what now? We’d like to share a few tips on what you can do ahead of time to prepare for your upcoming family photo session.

If you are planning any changes to your appearance, facials, or haircuts, etc… it’s best to get those out of the way a week ahead of time. You want to make sure there will be no reaction to a facial or a new product you’re trying. And getting a haircut ahead of time not only gives the hair time to adjust and not look so ‘fresh cut’ but also gives you a chance to get used to it and make sure your style is exactly what you want it to be on the day of the shoot.

We’ve said this before and we’ll say it again, it is important that your family is well-rested and fed!
Nobody is fun to be around when they’re hangry! Especially kids. Also, try not to schedule your photo session around your child’s nap or bedtime. It’s amazing what a difference it makes when everyone is well-rested. Everyone will be happier, your shoot will be more relaxed, and you will all look better in the final product!

Build in plenty of time to get ready for your shoot. It might seem obvious, but we’ve experienced the opposite, when people underestimate the amount of time it takes to prepare. A rushed family can make for a harried and rushed shoot. When you plan for plenty of time to get ready, you’ll experience a much more relaxed and fun family shoot.

And, lastly, the question we are asked most often: What Should We Wear?
First, think about what you plan on doing with your final photos. Are you planning on a large canvas print over your fireplace? Then we would ask you: what does your living room look like? Or if you’re decorating your home with prints, what style would best fit the taste of your home? Traditional? Choose neutral colors with soft, flowing fabrics. Think creams, soft pastels, oatmeals, and blues. Is your home modern? Maybe you want to choose grays set off with vibrant colors, or even stark black and white. Whatever the tone of your home is, think of that while planning your wardrobe. After all, you are about to create art!
If your plan for your photos is posting them on Instagram and splashing them across social media, then we would suggest clothing that really shows off who your family is. Are you fun and crazy? Choose a fun and crazy wardrobe that shows off each individual personality while complementing each other. Are you conservative and orderly? Choose formal wear, it always makes for a fun and memorable shoot. Do you like to be different? Choose flashy accessories and bold colors to add sassy flair.
The point is, your clothing should be comfortable and compliment what your desire is for the finished product - your captured memories.
Maybe most importantly, make sure you have everything chosen and laid out, clean and ready to go at least 24 hours before the shoot! There is nothing worse than having changed minds or missing items when the big day comes.

We hope this information helps you to plan for your family photo shoot this year, the captured memories are certainly worth your time and effort!
